Hidden Valley: The Unknown Cemetery
In 1874, Sonoma County Supervisors purchased 100 acres in Santa Rosa to establish housing for indigent poor residents; relocate the county hospital; grow crops for sale and to feed hospital patients, jail prisoners, and site residents; and create a county cemetery. This land housed those facilities on both sides of Chanate Road. The cemetery, which was the county’s first for indigents, was located on the vacant parcel on Hidden Valley Drive.
On August 19, 2021 the Historical Society of Santa Rosa and local cemetery expert, author, and historian Jeremy Nichols hosted a webinar to learn about the history of this site on Hidden Valley Drive as the county contemplates its sale.
